Gungarlin River Hut

Fly Fishing cabin located within the Kosciuszko National Park region

Gangarlin HutNestled within Snowy Plains and only a mere 45kms drive from Jindabyne, stands a private cattleman’s hut – Casey’s Hut – just a double haul away from the bank side of the boisterous Gungarlin River. Casey’s Hut is located at an elevation of 1360m, within a large holding of private property that borders the Kosciuszko National Park. Best of all it has extensive frontage to the Gungarlin River that only fly fishing guests can access via its locked gates. Because of its ideal location the fly fisherman is only a short drive to most streams and creeks within the region such as the Thredbo, Eucumbene, Murrumbidgee, Snowy, Moonbah, Burrungubugge, Bulls Peaks and Nungar, to name just a few.

Its annual snowmelt and altitude make the Gungarlin River a first class trout stream. Although the river predominantly contains rainbows, there is the odd brown trout and a sprinkling of brook trout Gungarlin fishingpresent. The river in this section is simply glorious, twisting and turning through tussock-laden banksides with numerous pools and runs and endless bubble lines one only dreams about. The water often boils with rising trout, as hatches can be prolific. Good numbers of mayfly, caddis, dragonfly, damsels and dobsonfly keep the trout looking up. Furthermore, the tussock banks provide amazing grasshopper fishing all the way into late autumn. Although it is dry fly heaven, nymphing enthusiasts rest assure – the stream is strewn with river rock and undergrowth providing great opportunities to refine ones’ nymphing skills.

The countryside is simply breathtaking with glorious mountain ranges surrounding the Plains. Wildlife abounds with platypus, kangaroos, possums, eagles, hawks and wild brumbies to name just a few.

Although basic, Casey’s Hut provides all the shelter and comfort hard-core fly fishing enthusiasts need after a full day’s fishing. It can accommodate up to six guests but is best suited to four guests. Costs vary depending on the number of guests and guiding services required.
